ISKI Tuzla Advanced Biological Wastewater Treatment Plant (2. Stage)

Tuzla Advanced Biological Wastewater Treatment Plant which is Turkey’s First and Largest Thermal Sludge Drying Plant using cogeneration, serves a population of 500.000 residents and prevents the discharge of 150 tons of untreated solid waste into the sea. In 2010, Group accomplished the second stage of the WWTP construction.

Project Start Date: January 2008
Project Ending Date: December 2010
Capacity: 100.000 m³/day
Population Equivalent: 500.000

Project Description

Process
The system consists of pretreatment, biological phosphorus removal, denitrification and nitrification through extended aeration, and final clarifiers, thus ensuring complete removal of carbon, nitrogen and phosphorus. Other facilities include sludge drying with CHP, anaerobic sludge digestion, odor removal with ozone, sludge decaying, sludge drying, UV disinfection, biofilters, biological phosphorus removal, pretreatment, preclarification, aeration, blower building, final clarifiers, and a cogeneration unit.

Goals

  • Advanced biological treatment of wastewater collected in the basin to protect the Marmara Sea,
  • Converting hazardous wet sludge (300 tons/day) into useful dry product (75 tons/day) through the sludge drying process,
  • Generating heat for thermal sludge drying using waste heat from the Gas Turbine Cogeneration System (2 x 4.6MW),
  • Adding four Anaerobic Sludge Digesters (8,000 m2 ) for biogas production,
  • Building an Ozonation Unit to solve the persistent odor issue in Tuzla.

Service Area
Treatment of wastewater generated in Gebze, Darıca, Çayırova, Pendik, Maltepe, Kartal and Tuzla, and flowing into the Marmara Sea.
